Rained Out Daytona 500

Yesterday afternoon was the 51st running of the Daytona 500. The biggest race of the year, the one that starts the racing season off with a bang. But yesterday it was more like a spark and the Daytona 400.

Yesterday’s “Great American Race” was called with 48 laps to go because of rain. And a winner was crowned because he was in the right place at the right time. All the fans in the stands and at home were forced to do without an exciting finish. No cars bumping and banging on each other trying to come out on top. Maybe the real winner was still waiting to make his move and he was not given the chance.

Shouldn’t there be a rule that all laps of the Daytona 500 must be completed? At a track like Daytona the scene can change with the drop of a hat. A driver gets into the wrong line without any help and they can go from first to twenty-first within on lap. With 48 to go, the race was just getting started. The die hard fans have been waiting three long months for this day and they were left unfilled.
